PRIVATE RESIDENCE

Situated in a suburban locale, the extension and refurbishment of this three storey Art’s and Crafts style semi-detached residence aims to re-emphasise unique period features of the original house while introducing a contemporary extension to the rear and to the internal aesthetics.

The brief required sensitive treatment of original Arts and Crafts-era design features, including replacement of original curved glazing and repairs to the roof and pebbledash cladding. The design of the south facing extension takes advantage of the opportunity to move sunlight through the large kitchen/ living/ dining area throughout the day via a series of frameless rooflights and large format frameless glazing. A high quality fit-out was provided in a contemporary style, with a palette of hardwood, natural stone and powder coated metal woven through living spaces. A curved staircase moves through the entrance hall to the upper levels top-lit by an apex rooflight. A studio structure was provided to accommodate break-out space for the family to the end of the long rear garden, which also accommodates a weather protected entertainment and outdoor kitchen area. High quality natural finishes were provided to hardscaping to the front of the building to harmonise with the natural pebbledash and brick finishes of the original building. The residence utilises air-source fed heating system and a mechanical heat recovery system to achieve an excellent standard of thermal performance.
